Stop light question?

ok there is a stop light near my house that has a bump out on the side of the main lane for cars to go around you if you are turning and the bump out ends right after you go under the stop light. I was sitting at this stop light intending to go straight and not to turn when this car goes around me in the bumpout and cuts me off causing me to slam on my brakes and slam on my horn. If there was an accident who would have been in the wrong because technically that is not considered a lane? please help my dad thinks that i should have stopped and looked before continuing through the light but that driver should not have gone around me and waited like everyone else behind me.
