Question:

Stop lights won't turn green for me on my motorcycle?

There's some traffic lights around my neighborhood that don't register when my bike pulls up so I'll sit for 3 or 4 lights until a car comes up behind me and triggers the light. Is there anything I can do to make them register when I pull up? Also, is it legal to run a light if it doesn't turn for me?

I've heard some people say if you wait 2 minutes and it doesn't change you can go if it's safe, I'm in Illinois not sure of the laws. My only other options are make a right turn and turn around somewhere or just wait for who knows how long until another car comes along. Both these lights are lights I go by several times a day so that doesn't seem practical. What can I do? Alos, what's the deal with those green light triggers. Are they legal? Do they work? Will it mess up my bike?

  1. buy magnets!

  2. "green light triggers" are just large capacity magnets to make your bike disturb the magnetic field under the paved surface (the way 4000 lbs of steel does)

they are cheap and will probably solve your problem...

  3. Many traffic lights are set off by a magnetic sensor located under the pavement.  Many motorcycles are not large enough to trigger this sensor.

You can purchase a device that is mounted to your bike to trigger this sensor.  See the link below for an example of this device.

Or Google Motorcycle Traffic Light Changer

The sensor that a traffic light uses to detect the presence of a vehicle is an induction loop buried just under the pavement at the traffic light.  Weight has nothing to do with how the sensor is tripped.  It is the amount of iron in the vehicle that is inside the induction loop.  Motorcycles are made up of plastic aluminum and metal alloys.  They do not contain enough iron to trigger the sensor.

A motorcycle traffic light changer is basically a magnet that you attach the bottom of your bike to trigger the traffic light sensor.  They fool the traffic ligh sensor into believing there is a large steel object in the inductive loop.

This type of traffic light changer is not illegal.  They are inexpensive, usually costing from $20 - $25

  4. There is a sensor that triggers the light. These are located in different places. You need to find out exactly where to stop to trigger it.

It is illegal to run a light.

  5. just turn right...then left.Or wait for a big truck to come along
