Question:

Stop neighbors leaving apartment building main door unlocked?

My neighbors keep leaving the building's main door unlocked.

Things get stolen only when this door is left unlocked so I want them to leave it locked.

The landlord stated he doesn't care and will not take responsibility for any of it.

Is there any way to jam it so it stays locked?

  1. take up a collection amongst all the tenets and have the landlord put in a pass code door lock.  It will cost $250-$300 ish and then if someone forgets there key there not locked out

  2. Ask your landlord to install a storage lock or sometimes called a foyer lock. The door is always in the locked position. You can always exit from the inside by turning the k**b. When  the door is shut you always need a key to get in from the outside

  3. If your landlord won't install a foyer lock (since he doesn't care) hire a locksmith to do it and have them key it the same as the other lock. Get 3 estimates. Then leave a note reminding the other tenants to take their keys when they leave, or they will get locked out. Your landlord might be able to evict you for modifying the building, so you might want to ask permission first.
