Question:

Stop signs with no limit line

Some stop signs don't have limit lines, especially stop signs in residential areas. Without a limit line, is it mandatory to make a complete stop BEFORE a stop sign? Im asking this because when i stop before a stop sign in residential crosswalks, Im unable to see the oncoming traffic, and I would have to pull up slowly until I can see oncoming traffic.

  1. If there's no limit line then you have to stop before the sign. If there's a crosswalk you have to stop before the crosswalk. Then, if you can't see the oncoming traffic you inch forward until you can determine it's safe to go. That is valid in all states.

  2. I don't know where you are but here in NJ you must stop before entering the intersection if no stop line or crosswalk is present. If a stop line or crosswalk is present you must stop before crossing that but within 5 feet of it. .
