Stop underestimating Orlando Magic - Dwight Howard lashes out at the media: NBA Update
Dwight Howard has seemingly heard a little too much about the plight of Orlando Magic and the franchise’s star man doesn’t like it. Dwight recently sent a warning shot and a rebuttal to the media, whom he believed have been too negative in their coverage of his team.
Howard was speaking while on a promotional tour of Paris for Adidas, a brand which he endorses. The big guy wasn’t too pleased of the constant media scrutiny of his team and their lack of chances to win an NBA World Championship next year. In addition to that, there has been widespread speculation over Dwight Howard’s own future, with the player touted to leave now or next year at the latest.
This despite him making it clear quite a few times, that he will be staying in Orlando because he loves the city and the franchise. Now it seems Howard has had enough and the ‘Superman’ has decided to make his feelings public on the matter,
“I really think we get no love at all, to be honest. But that’s ok. We want to be respected by the teams we play and that’s the only thing that matters. The media can pick whoever they want to win the title, but the team that wins the title is the team that plays.”
The star centre went on to quote the example of the Dallas Mavericks to support his point. The Mavs were written off by NBA analysts and the media in general before the season even began. However, despite having an aging roster, ravaged further by injuries, they pulled off one of the biggest surprises in recent NBA World Championship history. Behind an amazing display from Dirk Nowitzki and his fellow old timers, the Mavs defeated the highly favoured Miami Heat and their Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in the NBA Finals.
It was the first NBA title in the history of the franchise and the Mavs proved everyone wrong by winning it all. Now Howard is backing his team to write a similar tale of “against all odds” success next season and simply doesn’t care about what other people have to say,
“I’m pretty sure nobody thought that the Dallas Mavericks were ever going to win the title this year. It’s not about what anybody else says. It’s about what you believe. I believe in myself and in my team. We’ll bring our team to the top, then we will get some respect.”
To be fair, the Orlando Magic did not do themselves any favours when they crashed out to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the NBA playoffs this season. The media’s perception couldn’t have been expected to be rosy about their chances after that.
However, with the steely determination of Dwight Howard lighting the way, Orlando might yet produce some magic.
