I'm travelling from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah to Vancouver, Canada and I'm hoping to have a stopover at Hong Kong, for a few days to do some shopping. Can anyone tell me how can I do that?

Is there any special procedures I need to follow? Any extra charges?

Actually I havent confirm my flight booking, is there anyone who can recommend me the cheapest way to fly to VANCOUVER, CANADA from KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA?

thanks you

  1. Try Cathay Pacific, they have flights to HK from KL and to Vancouver from HK and they do allow a stopover in HK for as many days as you like.

  2. I'm not sure what planet the first poster is on, but HKG immigration for me has been smooth and under 10 minutes each time I've been through - numerous times in the last couple of years. There is NO departure tax, except in the extremely rare case where an airline doesn't include it in the ticket. Somehow I think he's confused HKG with another airport.

I'm not sure what nationality you are but if you're from an ASEAN country then you should get visa-free entry for a couple of weeks or more - many other countries are visa-free also.

When booking, if you do it online, use the "multi city" or "multiple destinations" option. Put your dates in for BKI to HKG, HKG to YVR, and YVR to BKI. A quick search on Expedia gave a quote of £1200 but I'm sure you can do better (that was on Malaysian, Air Canada, and Asiana) if you play around with dates.

If you book over the phone or at a ticket desk, specify that you want a stopover. Many ticket fares allow for this for free.

Always call the airline and shop around online to make sure you've got the best deal.

  3. You will find Hong Kong Immigration is a very slow process. Be prepared to stand for an hour. There is a Departure tax when you leave of about £10 Sterling. From the motorway around the Island, You will see the biggest neon sign in the world.

  4. You will get a shopping guide for Hong Kong at the shopping tab at : http://www.gostreetmaps.com/hong-kong.ht...
