Question:

Stopping my cat from chewing on cords?

My cat loves to chew on cords, wires, string, whatever that is long and thin. Some cords she doesn't bother at all, and others she can't get enough of. I usually keep the cords covered with a towel or something because she doesn't bother them when they're covered (out of sight, out of mind), but I hate to have to do this all the time. Any suggestions on how to get her to stop this chewing?

  1. put Tabasco sauce or lemon juice on them

  2. Get cord keepers, basically a flexible tube that wraps around cords and used to keep a tidier appearance. Ikea sells a good one or you may be able to find them in office supply stores. Go to a pet store and get some cat grass, if she must chew on something may as well be good for her and not dangerous. Pet stores also carry products to help pets stop chewing on that can be sprayed on to make the cords taste bad. Generally pets chew on things because they are bored so also try playing with her more. Good luck!

  3. Rub them down with something foul tasting, especially the electrical cords. There's a product from pet stores called "Bitter Apple" that we've used with our cats.  You just dab it on a paper towel and wipe the object down.  It works like a charm and I believe it's non-staining.  And it won't hurt your cat.  :)

Co-worker of mine swears by tabasco but I haven't tried this...

  4. Coat them with Bitter Lime (you can find it in any pet store).
