Store bought sweet potatoes sprouting, can I plant them???

I bought a few sweet potatoes that I normally cut in half and take for lunch. I have two that were sitting that I forgot about and now they both are growing sprouts. One has about 10 different sprouts about 4 inches long, the other 4 about 3 inches. Can I just plant them in the ground or is there something else I need to do first? Or can they be planted at all?

  1. Yes, you can plant them.  The difference between seed potatoes & store-bought ones is the seed  potatoes are usually treated with chemicals to prevent diseases such as mold etc.,

    Enjoy.

  2. Dig a hole. plant the sprout pointing up, and cover them. Be sure to 'mound" the soil over the plant to make a hill. dig them back up this fall after the vines start to die off.

  3. sweet potatoe plants will grow, but don't plant them in dirt, they will grow in water, ideally, put them in sunny window, in a dark colored glass, (works better than a clear one)..they will vine out, going all over the place. after they vine, you can take a cutting, root it in water, and then plant it in dirt. i'm 50, an my grandma always had them growing everywhere. pretty plants!!
