Buying a telescope is a big decision. Here are a few tips to get you started.

    Michael E. Bakich

Buying a telescope, like buying a car or stereo equipment, is subject to your tastes as a consumer. In other words, the choice is up to you — but Astronomy can provide some guidelines to make your purchase as informed as possible. The next sections detail the different types of telescopes along with a bit of history and some general advantages and disadvantages for each. If you're familiar with telescope designs, you can skip to the section, "Things to remember when buying a telescope."

    Refracting telescopes

A small refractor gives young observers portability, sharp images, and all-purpose flexibility. Astronomy.com: Jim Forbes [View Larger Image]Refraction is the bending of light as a result of its passage from one medium (such as air) to another (such as glass). A refracting telescope makes use of this property with a carefully made lens having curved surfaces. As light passes from air to glass and then back to air, its path is bent toward the optical axis of the lens. If the surfaces of the lens are shaped properly, the light is brought to a focus.

The first telescope (of any type) was constructed by the Dutch spectacle maker Hans Lippershey (1570–1619) who, on October 2, 1608, filed a patent application for "an instrument for seeing faraway things as though nearby." This was a tube — with a convex lens at the front and a concave lens in the rear — that one would look through. The device magnified objects approximately 3 tim

Wow, one guy got kinda excited, didn't he?  I'd suggest that it's not a good idea to buy a telescope from a store, even if you could find one.  There are a few stores, usually camera shops with extended inventory, that have some larger telescopes AND have at least one person who can advise you about them.  These are few and far between.  The best bet is to educate yourself about what you want and need, then buy online from a reputable dealer.  Join your local astro club, borrow a scope, visit other amateurs, and attend a couple of 'star parties'.
