Question:

Storing television series dvds?

I have a growing dvd collection and I'm looking for a space saving way to store them. I have found storage racks for dvds that serve the purpose of storing my single movie dvds, however, a majority of my dvd collection are seasons of my favorite television shows and the slots in the racks aren't wide enough for them. Does anyone have any creative suggestions to store my tv dvds?

Thanks

  1. I would suggest getting some CD/DVD storage books/cases ... the type that allow the disks to be stored in plastic sleeves rather than the original boxes. Some are cheap and unattractive, but there are some nice ones. See the link for some alternatives.

The downside of some is you don't have the info on the back cover handy ... but in those cases you could photocopy the back sheet and include with the disks. Others at the link allow for storage of the back sheet along with the disks themselves.

  2. I originally just used one of those media racks you can buy from Frys, Best Buy, etc.  They have various shapes and sizes, but all of them are basically like small bookshelves that are designed to hold CDs, DVDs or VHS tapes.  The ones I had were about 3 and a half feet tall, and used a series of 3 rods for each "shelf" (4 shelves in total.)  It also includes some shelf dividers that clamped onto the rods.  They were about $30 each and each unit holds about  250 disc DVD cases.

Another idea we had was to just use standard bookshelves, and then get some small DVD crates for the cases.  These can be found at Walmart, Target, etc. and are about $5-10 per crate.  Each crate should hold about  25 single disc cases.

Whatever you decide on, choose something that will keep the discs vertical.  You don't want to just stack them on top of each other as the added weight from the cases on top can cause the discs to become warped.
