Question:

Stormello win the Kentucky Derby 2007?

I know very little about horseracing but am an extremely lucky person-really. I get a gut feeling about Stormello winning but I do not have any facts or information to support my gut feeling. Do any professionals in the field know if my "feeling" may have some basis? Is this horse truly a contender?

Thanks!

  1. I realy like him and so does my mom when she picks a horse he usally wins. stormello only wins by a little but he does not let any one pass him when he takes the lead which is usally to soon.i like him and birdbirdistheword i like him i have a gut feeling for him.

  2. He ran a big race the first time out this year - getting edged out by Scat Daddy in the Fountain of Youth on 03/03 - but faded badly to fourth after being close to the lead in what may be his final Derby prep in the Florida Derby on 03/31.

His co-owner/trainer William Currin was not pleased with the ride Stormello received in the Florida Derby from Victor Espinoza and I wouldn't be surprised if - in the Derby - someone like Richard Migliore would get the nod.

There are many variables to go in a Derby pick - and most important is the post position draw - but Stormello is gutsy and may have a bounce after being flat in his last race.

I have been following him since his 2 yo debut last year and am not pushing him aside for my early Derby picks.

  3. Well right now there are no "for sure" contender's in the Kentucky Derby yet. But I really don't think Stromello has what it takes to be honest.

I am actually feeling really lucky about Hard Spun, Circular Quay, and Curlin.

Stormello was on my Derby list but there are just so many good horses this year and yes Stormello is one of them but I'm sorry, I don't think he has what it takes. I bet he will come in maybe 3rd or 4th, but not 1st.

I am no professional so I might be wrong but I've been studing all the contenders this year and there are really nice horses running.

Well hope that I sort-a helped out.

  4. I think Stormello has a small chance! He came in second on Fountain of youth and 1st on Hollywood Futurity! Plus the jockey, Kent Desormeaux, is pretty good too!!! Hope I helped you !!!

  5. I think he'll contend for it, but we won't really know until then.  There's still the Blue Grass & Arkansas Derby to run this Saturday, then the Lexington the following Saturday.  Only then, when we find out who's running in the Derby, can we find out.

My early choices:  Nobiz Like Showbiz, Scat Daddy, Tiago.

  6. I don't think this horse can handle the distance with his current run on the lead style.

He ran the Fountain of Youth and faded a bit in the stretch after running on the lead for most of the race.  I said then that they should work on his endurance and they didn't...  evidence: he faded even harder in the Florida Derby.  The Kentucky Derby is longer than either of these races, so Stormello has some work to do if he wants to win.

Personally I don't care much for this horse...  I think he's really cute and he'd make for a really nice hunter jumper...  but i don't think he'll be a very good distance horse with his run on the lead style.

He didn't have a bad 2 year old record, but 2 year old races are shorter than 3 year old races.  This year he's had 2 starts and all he has is one 2nd place...  he was really close to 1st in that race, and there's some question about whether he even saw Scat Daddy running up the outside before it was too late...  but his showing in the FL Derby wasn't great.

you can watch his races at the NTRA website if you want to see his races for yourself...  here's his page: http://www.ntra.com/stats_bios.aspx?id=2...

where you see his race results, you can click on the links to the races to see video of it.

Anything could happen, but I personally don't think stormello will win.   I really like Scat Daddy...  and he gets very little attention...  others to look for: Hard Spun (coming off quite a layoff if he runs the Derby at all), Street Sense (running the Bluegrass on Saturday before heading for the Derby), Circular Quay (was going to run the Wood last weekend, but Pletcher says he's ready, so he skipped right to the derby...  8 week layoff)...  Nobiz gets a lot of attention too and after his run in the Wood, he'll be the favorite for the Derby...  but we know how rarely the favorite actually wins the Derby.

  7. As of now I think Stormello is on the fence and most likely won't run in the Derby.  He has already shipped accross the country twice and run two tough races, and I don't think too highly of the quality of the 2 Gulfstream preps this year (aside from Nobiz, who seems to be marginally better now that he has blinkers).  He had a great foundation as a 2 year old, and is a tough little guy, but I don't think the Derby sets up well for him.  I wish I could tell you I think he will win, because I did think he had a shot a few months back and have him in the Future Pool at 40-1.  But I think his career lies more in 7 furlong to 1 mile races.  Bet him in the Met Mile next year, he'll turn out to be a nice extended sprinter.

EDIT: well it looks like they are going to run as of today, following the race it seemed Curin was leaning towards not going.  I guess they are going to try and change his style according to this article, I still think he'll be a better long sprinter though.  http://tcm.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?...

  8. Stormello is certainly a legitimate contender, he's got a shot.
