Stormers grab first win in Canberra by defeating Brumbies 16-3: Super Rugby update
The Stormers managed to secure their maiden victory in Canberra by defeating Brumbies 16-3 in a Super Rugby match, played today, May 28. The victory has also confirmed the Stormers’ position in the semi final stages. The match was one of the lowest scoring
games of the current Super Rugby season.
South African toppers, Stormers, went into the match with their star player, Jaque Fourie, making a comeback. Jean de Villiers was included in the playing 15 after the absence of one match, played last week against the Blues.
On the other hand, Brumbies were deprived of their skipper, Rocky Elsom, due to an ankle injury. Matt Giteau was also missing in the game, and was replaced by Matt Toomua. The Brumbies have remained out of colour in the whole tournament and won just two
games after 13 outgoings.
The Brumbies had nothing to lose in today’s fixture as they were already out of the play-off run. However, the match had meaning for the Stormers as a win would allow them to remain in the top four sides of the championship.
Though the Stormers were swift from the start, overall it was a sluggish play from both sides in the first part of the game. The crowd was left yawning and waiting to see if either side would produce fireworks. Only three penalties were scored during the
first half of the game. The Stormers were slightly ahead of the Brumbies with 6-3 at the interval.
The spectators, at last had something to cheer after the break, as Francois Louw scored the first try of the match. Gary Coleman increased the total to 13-3 with a successful conversion in the next minute. The Stormers ended the match 16-3 as the referee
blew the final whistle and let the Stormers secure their maiden victory in Canberra.
This was the sixth consecutive defeat for the Brumbies in the ongoing Super Rugby season. They made some desperate efforts in the match but the Stormers’ defence was flawless.
The Stormers were very excited to grab their first win in the Australian capital. They have also enhanced their chances to play the semi final stages. Recently, the Stormes were ranked third on the table, a further victory and a Reds’ defeat tomorrow could
put them on top. They will take on the Melbourne Rebels on June 3 in the next clash of Super Rugby.
