  1. Neither one of these is actually an invention, both are discoveries.  [E.g. you can't invent that water is wet, but you can discover it.]

The matter of digits is actually more complex because there are 3 paths to digits.   One is a small set of marks - lines and crosses - matching the way we count using fingers and hands - so Roman numerals  are VI  for one hand (5) plus 1 finger = 6 in decimal.

Another is using letters to stand for numbers as enumeration.  Modern Braille uses A, B ....J for 1-9 and 0 with a number symbol before.  Ancient Greeks used Alpha, Beta, etc., the first 9 letters for 1-9, then the next 9 for 10-90 and the next for 100+   One unfortunate result was that some numbers were bad - the equivalent of WAR (with English letters) or 666 being the sign of the beast (from letters of his name).

Different methods blended toward standard marks for values and when the zero was picked up by Arab scholars and used as a place holder, the modern system of digits being is a place to designate their value was worked out.

The Pythagorean theorem was worked out by developing squares (literally drawing squares) on the sides of the triangle and showing the area of the hypotenuse was the sum of the sides.
