I can give you my personal speculation if it helps.

Fighting the dragon head on will only result in you BBQing yourself, since he's got the fire and everything - so, jump on his back and ride along with him so you can stab him in the back of the head when he's not expecting it.  Maybe by 'go with him' it means pretend to be his buddy so he lets his guard down so you can get to a position of strengh, then stick it to him.
