Strait of Dover and Classic Bryce post sizzling works ahead of the Queen’s Plate
As the $1 million Queen’s Plate Stakes draws closer, entrants intensify their work routines to go over a distance 1 ¼ miles over the Woodbine racetrack’s dirt course on 24 June, 2012, and the one who turned heads while posting a regular work ahead of the
big event was Canyon Farms’, Strait of Dover.
In his final major tune-up for the Queen’s Plate, the 3-year-old Daniel J. Vella trained colt, Strait of Dover worked five furlongs over Woodbine’s main track on 18 June, 2012.
Strait of Dover in his first three furlongs set the track ablaze, when the clockers caught him posting the distance in a sizzling 36 seconds, as he went on breeze in 1 minute and 0.40 seconds and then galloped out six furlongs in 1 minute and 14.40 seconds,
along with his regular rider, Justin Stein.
“He was very professional,” Vella said. “He worked nice and even, was off strong and finished strong.
“Justin did just a great job, did just what I asked him to. We wanted a good work, and he said he had tons of horse the whole way.
“We’re ready.”
On the other hand, the 3-year-old Grand Slam colt, Classic Bryce, under rider Todd Kabel went 0.20 seconds over Strait of Dover’s 36 seconds for three furlongs, who worked in company with the 5-year-old stable mate, Prized Humor.
Trained by Darwin D. Banach for owner William A. Sorokolit Sr. Classic Bryce worked five furlongs in 1 minute and 1.20 seconds, and then galloped out six furlongs in 1 minute and 14.20 seconds.
“Everything was perfect,” Banach said. “He did just enough to get something out of it.”
The son of English Channel, out of Danzig mare Bahrain Star, Strait of Dover, is coming off a three race win streak, which includes a maiden special weight race at second asking, an allowance race at seven furlongs, and the hat-trick race was the Marine
Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. All of his three races were run over the synthetic surface of Woodbine racecourse.
While Classic Bryce, after breaking his maiden at second asking was introduced to stakes company, but only managed an eight and two second place finishes, as he comes off a third place finish in the Plate Trial Stakes.
