Question:

Strange, prehistoric-looking mutant bluejays?

My boyfriend and I saw the strangest looking birds today..they looked like bluejays with the same exact colors and patterns, that mutated with a long-necked, fleshy, vulture or turkey. They actually looked reptilian, with bald "scaly" shrunken heads. They were big too, about the size of a small chicken, and they made high-pitched shrills, unlike anything I've ever heard before.

They also were extremely clumsy, literally "forgetting" how to fly while in mid-air, then they'd fall through the trees straight down, hit off the ground, then dart away through the bushes with a clumsy, heavy gait.

They seemed totally disoriented, like they didn't even know what they were! (And they were travelling with normal bluejays).

Anybody else see these mutated birds before? What are they???

They didn't even act birdlike, they seemed more heavy-footed like a prehistoric bird would be!

Weird..!

  1. I think you saw a Helmeted Guineafowl which escapes from captivity.

  2. Except for the size, you've given an excellent description of juvenile blue jays learning how to fly.

  3. Did they look like this? http://www.whatbird.com/forums/forums/st...

  5. I've never heard them compared to blue jays, but it sounds like you're describing guinea fowls.  They act crazy and make the high pitched noises.  Take a look at this site and see if you've found your mutant blue jays.  Scroll down and look at all the varieties because they come in different colors.
