Question:

Strange Bowel Movements when switched to whole milk??

My son has been on Similac Alimentum since he was 3 months for colic and cow's milk protein allergies. He is a yr. old and he has recently been doing some formula and some whole milk. His BM's have been very strange, sometimes orange and red. And he is also having them more than normal. Is this normal in the transition to whole milk.. or should I be concerned. Any help would be appreciated (:

  1. If ur baby was on alimentum for milk allergies you shouldn't be given him whole milk. People with those allergies have a lot of problems when drinking milk. I am 23 and still have problems when i try whole milk. It is called lactose intolerance, you can buy milk that does not contain lactose in any grocery store.

  2. *sigh* people, lactose (milk sugar) intolerance is TOTALLY different that sensitivity/allergy to milk protein

Yes, bowel movements change color and consistency all the time based on what they are eating/drinking.  If still concerned, call your doctor.

  3. I am a CMA and a mother of a daughter who has Reflux Disease and is Lactose Intolerant My daughter had to be put on Soy formula and Soy milk... It sounds like an allergy... Talk to his Pediatrician and see what he or she recommends

  4. My daughter was on Alimentum for almost 8 months.  When she switched to cows milk, she did have strange bowel movements for awhile until her tummy get use to it.

Keep an eye on it for a few more days and see if they get back to *normal*  If they don't call your doctor and get their advice.

Does he have any other symptoms of the cows milk sensitivity like gas, blood in stool, etc?  If not, than I wouldn't be to concerned.

Also, my daughter bowel movements are very *colorful* depending on what she eats.  Today they were blueish because she was eating a ton of blueberries.  The bowel color will change based on what they are eating.

  5. Red doesn't sound good, like fresh blood? Orange could be blood too, I think you need to take him to the dr.  and a nutritionist.

  6. I think you should ask your pediatrician first thing Monday morning. Are you giving him any other foods that may cause the discoloration of his BM? I have 2 kids myself and they successfully transferred to a regular milk. They didn’t like the taste at fist, but that’s a different story. The color of their BM definitely didn’t change with whole milk.
