Strange But Fun Board Games?

Question

2 unusual board games we have found are carcasonne, a tile-map building game, and Settlers of Catan, a tile resourse trading game. Anyone know of other off-beat games?

I wouldn't consider Carcassonne or Settlers of Catan "off-beat games" but rather they are examples of good games designed by authors who know what is fun to play.  A lot of the games that are sold in American mass-merchant retail stores are either remarkably old designs (the classic American stalwart Monopoly was created in 1935, based on a game created in 1907!), or are re-hashes of the same game over and over again, or are merely eye-catching products that fall well short in terms of game-play.

Setters actually is a quite good game that won the German "Game of the Year" in 1995.  Carcassonne also won Game of the year in 2001.  Germany has given the Game of the Year (Spiel des Jahres) every year since 1979, and the most recent winner is Zooloretto.  Here's a listing of other Game of the Year Winners and nominees : http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/S...

There is a wealth of information about games like Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne on BoardGameGeek.com.  The community has been around since 2000, and features a database of over 32,000 games and expasions, with user-submitted content and reviews on most titles.

Most communities have a local game store (with more game stores located in larger cities).  Many of these game stores stock the most popular titles of these types of games, and many also have open-play times at the shop, so you can check out what games you might like.  

I personally have a game collection of about 500 games and expansions... and it all started a couple of years ago with Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan.
