Strange event - thick, perfectly straight, chalky gray line appeared over night underneath bedroom door. ??

Question

The strangest thing happened last night. When I opened my door to my room this morning, there is this thick, perfectly straight black line that runs across the floor, from one side of the door frame to the other under the door. Are there logical answers to this? It was certainly not there last night, not even a faint line. I know for sure. Then this morning it is there - What's the deal?

If you do not have good ventilation for your central air and you keep the door closed at night and you have not maybe changed your filter lately, a buildup of dirt and dust can accumulate under the door frame exactly as you have described and sometimes, it stains and will not vacuum up. Seen it.

Okay, chalky? Like someone had drawn a line in chalk or just chalk dust? Does it come off if you rub it with your finger? How thick is the line and does it have sharply defined edges? What sort of surface is it on?

How old is the building? Have any sort of renovations been done?

What is under the carpet, wood floors, concrete?

Do you know what sort of floor covering was there before the white carpet?

I am wondering if whatever it is could be coming up through the carpet?

I'm guessing some kind of mold or mildew.They can go from dry to oily.

Was there a rug there that was moved? Dust can accumulate along rugs or anything that's sitting on the floor for a length of time. How about a heavy piece of furniture which was set down there on the floor and slid, scraping a line into the floor? There are potentially many things which could explain it, but I don't have any details to go on. Remember this line could have been put there the day before and you didn't notice it until the morning after. And do you have kids who play with chalk?  I don't see any reason to think it is paranormal, just based on what you've told. How about investigating this a little further. Try to determine what the chalky line is made of and report back?

perhaps you have a pipe of some sort that runs underneath the flooring there, and something burst or burnt. What I would do is rip a tiny discreet portion of the rug to check the actual flooring, if that's not disturbed any way than I would see what could have caused it from ABOVE. Check under the door for mold or mildew if that's not the case, just rent a steam cleaner and give that a whirl. If the line reappears than you obviously have some sort of unexplained phenomena happening and should seek a more expert opinion.

Curious for sure. Can you give more detail? Was it loose material, literally like chalk where you could run your finger thru it? Or was it not heaped up, but more like flush with the floor....like ink? Was it black black? Or just...black....like something might have been painted there? Do you live alone? Kids? Someone playing a joke, albeit an odd joke.

Is it possibly some kind of stripping that was fastened to the under-side of the door that might have gotten shaken loose during the night?

Does it have an odor?

Were there any other such 'lines' under any other doors in your residence?

Probably never find out for sure, if this is truly legit.
