Question:

Strange global warming predictions?

How many studies have concluded that global warming will lead to unexpected results, for example: an ice age.

Are these legitimate concerns or an unlikely outcome exaggerated by the media?

Russian scientist says Earth could soon face new Ice Age

    14:31 | 22/ 01/ 2008

ST. PETERSBURG, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Temperatures on Earth have stabilized in the past decade, and the planet should brace itself for a new Ice Age rather than global warming, a Russian scientist said in an interview with RIA Novosti Tuesday.

"Russian and foreign research data confirm that global temperatures in 2007 were practically similar to those in 2006, and, in general, identical to 1998-2006 temperatures, which, basically, means that the Earth passed the peak of global warming in 1998-2005," said Khabibullo Abdusamatov, head of a space research lab at the Pulkovo observatory in St. Petersburg.

According to the scientist, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere has risen more than 4% in the past decade, but global warming has practically stopped. It confirms the theory of "solar" impact on changes in the Earth's climate, because the amount of solar energy reaching the planet has drastically decreased during the same period, the scientist said.

Had global temperatures directly responded to concentrations of "greenhouse" gases in the atmosphere, they would have risen by at least 0.1 Celsius in the past ten years, however, it never happened, he said.

"A year ago, many meteorologists predicted that higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would make the year 2007 the hottest in the last decade, but, fortunately, these predictions did not become reality," Abdusamatov said.

He also said that in 2008, global temperatures would drop slightly, rather than rise, due to unprecedentedly low solar radiation in the past 30 years, and would continue decreasing even if industrial emissions of carbon dioxide reach record levels.

By 2041, solar activity will reach its minimum according to a 200-year cycle, and a deep cooling period will hit the Earth approximately in 2055-2060. It will last for about 45-65 years, the scientist added.

"By the mid-21st century the planet will face another Little Ice Age, similar to the Maunder Minimum, because the amount of solar radiation hitting the Earth has been constantly decreasing since the 1990s and will reach its minimum approximately in 2041," he said.

The Maunder Minimum occurred between 1645 and 1715, when only about 50 spots appeared on the Sun, as opposed to the typical 40,000-50,000 spots.

It coincided with the middle and coldest part of the so called Little Ice Age, during which Europe and North America were subjected to bitterly cold winters.

"However, the thermal inertia of the world's oceans and seas will delay a 'deep cooling' of the planet, and the new Ice Age will begin sometime during 2055-2060, probably lasting for several decades," Abdusamatov said.

Therefore, the Earth must brace itself for a growing ice cap, rather than rising waters in global oceans caused by ice melting.

Mankind will face serious economic, social, and demographic consequences of the coming Ice Age because it will directly affect more than 80% of the earth's population, the scientist concluded.

  2. Scientists don't call it "Global Warming".  They call it "Global Climate Change", since there will be different climatic effects at different locations on the globe.  The term "Global Warming" is outdated and causes many misconceptions.

  3. Truth is nobody knows what will happen. We could have an Ice Age if too much fresh water from the melting ice messes with the salinity of the Gulf Stream. If the Gulf Stream shuts down we get a cooling in the northern hemisphere. That's one theory. The other is that he melting water makes the oceans rise and flood out alot of land. Some places are already affected by rising oceans. Try watching the shows on Discovery and the Science channel. That's where I got this from. Only one way to find out what effect global warming is having, sit back , wait and watch.

  4. Some are exaggerated.  Some are legitimate hypotheses (emphasis on the word HYPOTHESES--meaning a possibility, not a certainty).

The "ice age" is the best known--and is quite legitimate.  The basic idea is taht a combination of global warming and melting of polar ice could cause the Gulf Stream--which warms eastern North America and Western Europe) to shift its course.  If tha toccurred, those regions would cool off, even though the overall global temperature was higher.  That could trigger the formation of new glaciers much further south than has been the case since the end of the last Ice Age.  A sort of "mini" ice age, in other words.

Its simply one of an array of computer models that telll us something about what the effects of global warming are likely to be.  Because its an attention-grabbing image, its gotten a lot of media attention.

The real lesson from this is to understand tha tour world is a VERY complex place--and the effects of global warming are going to be just as complex.

  5. Global warming is another one of our lovely government coverups.  There is no global warming.  What we are in store for is much bigger and much more disasterous.  Read planet X, or the 12th planet.

  6. Certain areas may get colder because of the disruption of warming oceanic currents.

There is also a theory that if a lot of forest burns due to global warming that the particulates will cause 'global dimming', which may lead to significant cooling.

    _____

Blake - ozone has nothing to do with global warming!!! google them both and figure it out!!

  7. Warming=A Melt. Doohoooo!

    Media=DAMIAN-minus ane.

  8. Yea - I read that global warming would cause more hurricanes, then I read that global warming caused fewer hurricanes.

You can also read that global warming causes snow, and droughts, and rain.  How many people believe the drought in the southeast is caused by global warming?  If the drought is over in 3 months, as it has in the past, will global warming be over?

I've even read that there are more field goals in the NFL this year because of global warming. (warm air, thiner air, balls travel further)

Anything that has already occurred can find it;s cause in global warming.  No one can tell what global warming will do in the future.

  9. in my own opinion i think there is global warming around the world, i mean just look around where you live. we can tell that human are destroying the ozone every day. in later centuries, we  will be regretting the things we do to the environment today.

  10. There will probably be many unexpected surprises[1], but I think that the notion that global warming will cause an ice age comes from the movie “Day After Tomorrow”.

  11. TOO MANY studies have been done at the expense of the hardworking LEGAL AMERICAN person who pays taxes to support a minority of overly paid braintrusts....who think up things....like...homeland security.....and braille keypads for drive up ATM machines....and color codes for levels of security risk....when millions of illegal aliens, including mexicans slip right into our country and suck us like ticks on a dog.....so, run hard and fast chicken little, sky's fallin'....and this once great country is going to implode....the media is a lot of hype....believe half of what they show you, and less than that of what they tell you..... by the way, thanks for writing in ENGLISH, and not spanish !

  12. If the coldest place on the planet is melting, basic critical thinking skills will lead to only one conclusion... those without that level of thinking skills will have their say here, but they won't post a source. They want you to believe it's just natural, we didn't cause it so we can't fix it. Some of them work for fossil fuel companies and are paid to hawk this site and inject doubt to maintain the status quo... just watch.

Tom Toncredo, you shouldn't claim to be the Colorado Kid! You make my state smell bad.
