i have 3 small koi in a 25 gallon tank. one is 4 inches long and the other two are approx 2.5 inches long. the last two days the larger koi has been just hiding behind the plants usually with one of the smaller fish but not always the same one, they just sit there motionless until i feed them. then they come darting out to eat, swim around for a bit and go back to the back of the tank behind the plants to hide. the ph is at 7.5 and the ammonia level is 0ppm. any help?

  1. koi are pondfish and shouldnt be kept in such a small tank for a start, but they also need a lot of cover, they are shy fish and tend to hide under floating plants etc. do you have a good filter running on the tank? they will need some water movement or they wont bother moving. i would rehome them and buy maybe 2 fancy goldies to keep in your tank.

  2. they could be breeding. but i doubt it. go to your pet shop or werever you got them from and tell them what they are doing or acting like. they will know more than people on this site. no affence like but they will.

  3. try reomove the plants temporary only and observe further.

  4. I guess the water temp is too low or

    those koi are stressed out.

I can tell you more specific answer if you could gave me more detail.

  5. For one your tank is to small, what are you going to do when they get bigger? Koi can reach 3 feet in lenght! Koi should be kept in at LEAST a 700 gallon pond, if you do not have this I would find a home for them or return them to the pet-shop.

Even if you were to keep them in a tank, the rule is one small koi per 30 gallons(which he will soon outgrow),overcrowding could likely be the problem. The koi at petsmart were I work are always swiming around, the younger ones are hiding though so it might just be there age.

Regardless I would move them from your tank as soon as possible!
