I saw a rainbow today, the thing is that it wasn't in opposite direction of the sitting sun, it was right over it :|

I know how rainbows usually occur, so don't explain it to me. I also know that normal rainbows must occur in opposite direction of the sun according to the mechanism of rainbows formation I know.

so tell me how can that be plz

TY

  1. A halo or a sundog maybee

  2. Hi Joe -

We used to see sundogs all the time when I was flying. They are full or partial rings that appear to surround the Sun when it is partially obscured by high ice crystal clouds. I suspect that's what you were seeing.

ADDED: I think the ice crystals act like prisms and refract the light through an angle toward your eyes. The angle varies with the wavelength, as it does in a prism.

  3. Well, i am guessing here but i think that since sun's rays travel in all direction, it doesn't really matter where the rain bow is.

  4. ever see multiple rainbows? when you see one look around sometimes if your lucky you can see more..
