  1. the les paul is better, however you're paying alot alot alot more fore just the name and prestige of the guitar.  I own both, and I rarely play my les paul.  I guess its just cuz i don't really identify with the les paul, and the strat just feels right to me (i don't play the strat much either though).  I have a vintage strat from japan made in the 1980s (considered by most vintage collectors to be the best ever made) and I also have one of those new american HSS strats, and theyre both pretty good.  I play the japanese one usually though.  I just own a 2006 les paul standard and i have a les paul studio a friend left at my house, and theyre both great guitars, but why pay that much for a guitar thats worth much less?  The les paul standard is about 2000 guitars.  My sponsored friends, who are not fully endorsed, get it for only about 13 or 1400.  My HSS stratocaster came to me with my sponsorship for about 5 or 600, compared to about a thousand, and  i have a high level sponsorship, as i get cheaper guitars for free.  I'd say to go with the strat, a great guitar for a great price.  Great quality, it will stay in tune, and sound great.  You'll want to play it.  It also wont make your neck sore for weeks after playing a 2 hour set.

  2. Well I own two Gibsons so I would say Les Paul. But it really depends on the sound you are looking for. Les Pauls are better for a psychadelic feel and bluesy feel as well. While Strats are better for Pop and rock. They also sound pretty decent bluesy too. The Fender telecaster is actually more like the Les Paul in its sound so that would be a better comparison.

  3. It depends on you, do you mean the real deal or copies.  I prefer Gibsons over Fenders, but thats just me.  I have both.

  4. Neither is "better" than the other. They sound completely different.
