Hi,

I've got a geography project about the June/July 2007 floodings in Stratford-upon-Avon.

I've done most of it i just need one thing...

I need to know a couple facts about the floodings, as i live in London i don't know much about the floodings (school in Stratford-upon-Avon though).

I need to know about 10 facts, best 10or so facts get best answer.

If you can do something like:

Number of mm rain during that month- xx mm

Number of buisnesses affected- xx buisnesses

Things like that i will highly apreciate.

ONE more thing!

It HAS to be about Stratford-upon-Avon nowhere else, sorry...

Thanks in advance!

  1. Stratford Upon Avon

    Why did the floods happen?

Heavy rainfall on 20 July led to surface water run off and river water overtopping banks. This caused major traffic disruption and property flooding in and around Stratford Upon Avon. 30 barges became stuck in the canal and one barge was untied before it became trapped under a bridge and later sank.

As a result of this heavy rainfall on 20 July, river levels rose at extreme rates to some of the highest levels ever recorded. The River Avon in Stratford reached a peak of 36.50m on 21 July at 07:00  (in 1998, the level peaked at 36.71m), which overwhelmed the banks causing water to spread out over the floodplain and into homes and businesses.

Where did the floods take place?

Waterside including the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre

Birmingham Road adjacent to the Racecourse Brook

    Properties adjacent to Shottery Brook

What did we do during the floods?

Throughout the floods we used a number of different ways to warn people of the risk of flooding from rivers. We use a combination of these methods depending on the information and systems that are available in that area. Examples of these are:

Regular updates via the media on TV, radio and the internet.

    Floodline - information was available 24 hours a day, 7 days by calling 0845 988 1188.

Live warnings in force were detailed on our website.

Floodline Warnings Direct - sent warnings 24 hours a day by telephone, text message, email, fax or pager. Register by calling 0845 988 1188.

What did we do to forecast where flooding would happen?    We use the latest technology 24 hours a day to monitor rainfall, river levels and sea conditions. We can provide local area forecasts on the possibility of flooding and its likely severity. We use this information to know when to issue flood warnings.

How did we warn the public?    We issued the following Flood Watches and Warnings:

12.22 on 20 July: a Flood Watch for the River Avon in Warwickshire.

17:36 on 20 July: a Flood Warning was issued for the River Avon from Stratford to upstream of Evesham.

19:17 on 20 July: a Severe flood warning for the area was issued.

What impact did the floods have?

How many properties were flooded?   Approximately 75 properties were flooded in Stratford Upon Avon.

How did our flood defences perform during the floods?   We have no raised flood defences at Stratford Upon Avon.

What did we communicate during and after the floods?

Since the flooding ended we have held a drop-in surgery in Stratford on 4 September to gather information and provide advice and assistance to the public on any flood-related enquiries.  We have listened to peoples concerns and answered a vast range of questions.

What are we doing in the future?

    Into the future

The 2007 summer floods provided us with valuable information about areas of England and Wales at risk from flooding. Find out how we will use this new information.
