Strauss admits England were second best to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 – Cricket News Update
English skipper Andrew Strauss has admitted his side was second best to the visiting South Africans, after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 suffered one of the heaviest defeats in the history of Test Cricket.
Stunning batting performances from Hashim Amla, Captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JH-Kallis-c1692 saw England crushed by a big margin of an innings and 12 runs.
Proteas batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 contributed 131 in his team’s total of 637. On the other hand, only four English batsmen managed to go past fifty in both the innings.
The English skipper criticised his batsmen for a weak showing on day four, when they lost four second innings wickets and left themselves with an uphill task.
"There are a number of areas where we are frustrated. We did not deal better with those conditions on the last day, and losing four wickets the previous night in pretty placid conditions made life difficult for us."
"We did not react well enough to that and that leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Most of my regrets are that we did not come out with a draw," said Strauss.
South Africa won the Kennington Oval Test at the cost of only two wickets, while England lost all 20.
The Poms showed some resistance in the second innings through http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DW-Steyn-c1409 hastened their demise.
By winning the first Test, the Proteas have become only the fifth team in Test history to win a test match by losing only two wickets. It was also England’s first Test defeat at home in 2 years, and their 5th overall in last 9 matches, which also includes
a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in UAE earlier this year.
Despite the defeat at Kennington Oval, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964 was optimistic his team had the ability to bounce back in the next encounter at Headingley, Leeds.
