Question:

Straw, HELP?!?

Okay, my mare is due soon :D

I need to know what is safe or okay to foal her on.

She has a 12x12 stall connected to a 24x12 paddock with a doorway. We plan on putting straw outside and inside, but no one seems to carry/sell it. Now what? Btw, I live in FL. If you know of anyone who sells it near the Wesley Chapel area, that'd be great. Thanks. :D

  1. use that packaged stall dry or something like that...its in the horse magazines.looks ligit

  2. Dont bother with the paddock, just fill her stall and lock her in there when her time comes (be sure to open her door after the foal can stand, especially if she is first time mother, as some get scared of the little 'alien' in their stalls if they can't get away from it).  Check landscaping companies, or call large stables for straw, and if you cannot find any use wood chips or hay (clean out afterwords).  Make sure the wood chips have no black walnut in them, as this is poisonous to horses.  Hope you get a fantastic foal!

  3. apparently many people are not aware than sawdust is not an appropriate bedding for a foal to be born on....

how about calling around to some breeding farms in your area? They might be able to tell you where to find some, or sell you a couple bales.  Calling around to landscape companies is a good idea, and you might even find some at  Home Depot.

I don't think you need to put any in the paddock, just close the mare into her stall when the time comes.

    Good luck!

  4. Check with some lanscapping contractors- they may have straw that they use when seeding.

  5. i wouldnt use straw i would get shavings from agway or a tractor supply or a woodmill     straw isnt sanitary and is hard to clean

  6. I'd suggest you use wood shavings instead of straw for summer beding. The straw that you'd get now is most old and alot might have mold starting, something you don't want for the Foal.

Most Lanscaping places will have straw other wise check your local Farm Co-op's board for people who may be selling it.
