Question:

Stray Puppy Health question Please help!?

Ok, I Just got through taking my own dogs to the vet yesterday, and I'm completely broke. This stray puppy wandered onto my porch during a thunder storm and he's limping pretty badly. He has a few scratches on the injured leg, but they're old enough that they've scabbed over already.

I assumed he'd go home after the storm but he didn't...so far I've observed him puking once (I did feed him a little food as he was pretty weak when he arrived, so it may just have upset his tummy) and I think he has diarrhea.

I'm hoping a vet will read this and tell me what I should do. I don't really want him around my other dogs if he may be sick, but my other dogs will have to go outside eventually.

Oh yeah, this pup has a collar but no tag, so I'm assuming he really does have an owner somewhere.

  1. he may need to be wormed if tummy got upset. Sorry I'm not a vet.  I have 4 blueheelers.

I would suggest taken a picture of the pup and place it in your vet office.   Also check the local newspaper for lost animals.

  2. OK first things first call the vet and they should have a car that goes to peoples houses like on call visits and they should be able to microchip it. They won't charge you any money, but then again it does depend on the vets you go to. If you are in Australia call the RSPCA there should be one somewhere close but if not then call the pound. These places won't charge you and if they cant find the owner then they will have it put up for adoption. Meanwhile you can make posters and signs. Just keep its fluids up. Also the pound and rspca have their own vets there.

    Hope this helps!!!

  3. Since you are unsure about the stray pups vaccination history and whether or not it has any diseases, it is best to keep your dogs away from it. If you are wanting to keep it, take it to your vet and have him check him out, give vaccines. If you don't want to keep him, call the SPCA or a local dog rescue in your area to see if they will take him.

  4. He could have parvo and if your dogs are not vaccinated, they will get it in 7-14 days so beware and call animal control.

  5. Can you take pictures and put them around the town, showing that you have found it? it is possible this poor baby ran off during a storm and is simply upset.Feed it chicken and rice for a few meals it might just be because of the storm. If not then you might have to call the pond.If the pup turns out to actually be sick. You need to make a solution of bleach and water and spray every where this pup was, make sure to remove any organic matter such as barf or bowl movements and place it in a sealed garbage bag away from your pets.Tilks Mom

  6. I wouldnt let my dogs around him. You should have animal control pick him up.

  7. Call animal control and have them come pick him up.

  8. With no money or ability for vet attention, I would suggest contacting your nearest no kill shelter or rescue agency *there is a rescue agency for pretty much every breed of dog* They will be able to give it the attention it needs, have better contacts in case someone is attempting to find it, and if not can get the ball rolling on finding a home for him.

  9. no tag, no owner. if the owner did care there would be tag. but i would take him to the vet to be 100% sure those are symptoms to many illnesses and only a vet can diagnose with a thorough check up. good luck and gos bless for taking him in :)

  10. Kennel him and keep him quarentined from the other dogs.  Give him a bath with flea soap and let him potty in a different part of your dogs yard.  Feed small amounts as it sounds like he has worms.  Use an antibiotic cream in small amounts on the wounds.  Paint a sign for your front yard that says "Dog Found".  If that doesn't work, call the shelter and have them take him.  They pay for vet care and put him up for adoption.

  11. I would not let the dog any where near my own pets. I would turn the dog in to the SPCA. The dog will have diarrhea because he is not eating his normal diet.
