Street Fighter x Tekken – Game Review for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360
The fans of fighting games had become extremely anxious for the release of Street Fighter x Tekken ever since it was officially announced by Capcom a couple of hours ago, though with careful optimism.
There were plenty of concerns for the fans, most of which were associated with the gem system that was to make its debut in the game. There were a lot of doubts regarding the affect of the new system on the fighting balance in the game, which is known to
be pretty delicate.
After spending hours playing the game and putting it under the microscope, I can tell you that you can stop fretting now because Capcom has produced a gem, no pun intended.
Presentation
Street Fighter x Tekken boasts a fairly customary arcade mode with a couple of cut-scenes and a boss-battle thrown into the mix, a traditional mission mode for competing fights with certain objectives and limitations imposed and a trial mode that aids you
in polishing your skills.
The collection of modes here are neither bad nor anything to write home about, but the arcade mode features the fight request option from the Street Fighter 4 that allows literally anyone to put their quarters up and challenge you in an online battle.
Street Fighter x Tekken has awesome graphics, exhibiting the general style of Street Fighter 4 while at the same time bringing the over-the-top visual style of Tekken forward. The super-moves are pleasing to watch, whereas the bright colours and superb animations
fit in quite nicely with the series’ recent theme.
Gameplay
As far as the fighting mechanics are concerned, the developers of Street Fighter x Tekken have definitely done their home-work. The game does well to combine the fluidity and frantic pace of Street Fighter with the trademark Tekken moves like manual throws
and attack systems that were seen in Tekken Tag Tournament.
There are plenty of new additions to the game mechanics. Players will now have the ability to call in their partner halfway through their combos, with the tagged character keeping the beating going. Super charge moves will enable you to pull off EX Special
as well as Super Art moves.
The Pandora Mode will help the players in bouncing back from hopeless situations, keeping them completely involved until the very end.
The biggest challenge made to the Street Fighter x Tekken formula was the inclusion of the gem system, a pre-loaded list of buffs that gives you boosts in strength, speed and power, as well as make some moves easier to hammer.
At first, the gem system did not come off as very impressive, especially due to their significant affect on the balance of the game’s fluid and frantic combat. It is perfectly understandable if you are wondering why Capcom would come up with the idea of
gems and then create an access to them through the game’s option menu. However, these gems do not have as big a negative impact on the game as was initially imagined. It all depends on how a player uses these buffs, as a particular buff or debuff will help
make the experience even more challenging and enjoyable. The boost buffs will activate after certain conditions have been met and will give you attack and defence power.
The Verdict
Street Fighter x Tekken is an amazing game that promises a heavy dose of fun and thrill to hardcore fighting game fans. The game offers one of the most impressive combat experiences ever, with the pacing and speed being fantastic.
We give the game a 9.00 for fun and fast combat, impressive roster from both Street Fighter and Tekken and the realisation that the gems do not actually suck.
