you can buy them at the airport >im italian, i know these things< but go to google maps then type in hotel morgana then a link at the top will come up by google maps - click on that

They are quite hard to find online, no problem just wait till you get there because EVERYWHERE sells them.

Trevi fountain and Spanish steps are both rubbish, avoid at all costs.

You can buy them there nearly everywhere, the hotel will have free ones without a doubt. I went to a bed & breakfast there and got one in my room on arrival

There are tourist offices in many places at the center and at the airport where you can get a very illustrative map for free.  They are in small green cabins and you can see them usually near the main attractions of Rome.  Of course you can buy maps everywhere which will save you the publicity on the free ones.

Illustrative maps on the net there are many but there are not that clear or good.

A good illustrative map in Rome is usually essential cause the street names and numbers are not always very clear or systematic.

I went to Rome several years ago and loved it. Be sure to go to Trevi fountain and throw a coin in. Long time tradition. Also go to the vatican and see St Peter's Cathedral. (Do not wear shorts). Also be sure to visit and see the Sistine Chapel. Have a great time.

Try Pop-Out map of Rome which you can buy on amazon.com or from most good bookshops or defined travel bookshops.  As the name suggests, the design is so that the map pops up in front of you.  The maps are very detailed, showing where lots of attractions and hotels are.  They also give street references, stock phrases for tourists, and secondary maps of things like metro systems and the greater Rome area.  I have used these for lots of other cities and have always found them useful.  They are also pocket sized so very convenient too.
