Hello,

A family member with a school phobia is considering a distance learning high school, offered by Indiana University (http://scs.indiana.edu). The program offers an IUHS diploma, accredited by the North Central Association.

I am unfamiliar with the diploma or the program. I've reviewed the website, but am interested in any personal expereince people may share. What are the strengths and weaknesses of an IUHS diploma from Indiana University?

Thanks,

Rex

  1. I've taken online college courses through IU as an adult.

My homeschooled son has not yet but will take a few dual credit courses through IUHS.

I really don't think you can go wrong with this program.

Here's what I see as pluses / minuses.

    Pluses:

    IU is a good school

As you mention it is fully accredited

    Can earn dual credits

    Can earn an honors diploma

    Can take AP courses

Their distance learning is one of the oldest programs around (e.g. they know what they are doing)

It will be challenging (+ / - depending on mind set)

Program accepts transfer credits and portfolio review credits

Choose from a variety of formats (online, correspondence, etc.)

I *think* it is possible to concurrently earn an AA and HS diploma through the program

    Minuses

It will be challenging (+ / - depending on mind set)

Cost (although not too bad for what you are getting)

Side comment: You and yours still need to address the phobia... don't simply avoid it or you will be setting your family member up for long-term suffering.  Make sure the family member gets some professional help and (even if it is baby steps) overcome the phobia.
