Question:

String theory, how were the membranes created ?

Many people say that the universe originated from the big bang, then they ask who started the big bang? The answer is sometimes god. If the universe was created with a big bang, how would the membrane that its attached to be created? Was this another big bang aswell ? What about the other membranes if there are parallel universes. There doesn't seem to be any sub theories within string theory on how the membranes were created. What are your thoughts on this.

  1. Hopefully firing up the Large Hadron Collider later this year will provide some insight.

  2. At this point in time, we don't know for sure whether they exist in anything other than a mathematical construct.  By the way, the LHC will not produce the energies needed to take us that far back, only to several seconds after the Big Bang.  In discussing putative branes, we would need to get back to the point of the singularity itself.

  3. String theory is known as the physics of the 21st century, so you have picked a rather difficult question to answer.

If you want to know the theory and all about these things your best bet is to read a book on it such as M.B.Green (1999) The Elegant Universe; Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory.

It is written for the layman but will give you some insights as to how Relativity, Quantum Mechanics and String Theory are the most promising hope for unifying a world theory.

Please read it. It will tell you all you need to know.

Oh and by the way god is not mentioned.

  4. Forgive me, this isn't an answer, but "God" should be capitalized, I'm not sure if you wanted to know that.

  5. If you want to posit "God" as the answer then you can ask the same question.

How was God created?  Where did God come from?  If God was always there then you could say the same thing for Membranes (or whatever).

Put another way you can continue to ask, "What came before?" forever.
