Question:

Stripped s***w Question?

I am trying to mount a TV arm mount into a stud in the wall. I drilled the holes and was able to get my 2 inch screws all but about 1/2 inch in before the screws became stripped.

What is my best bet here? I would prefer just to drive the screws into the wall as I don't plan on ever moving this mount. If this cannot be done, what is the best method to removing the stripped screws from the stud?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  1. Although they make a number of 's***w extractors' that you can find at your local hardware stores....one trick I use quite often is simply to chuck the head of the s***w into the drill (works best with a variable speed drill) and simply back it out slowly. Now use a new s***w in the place of the old stripped out one. They generally will sink all the way now that there is a pilot hole made.

    Best of luck.

  2. They have a cylinder shaped s***w holder that you can put into the hole that will allow you to keep the s***w in safely without it falling out. I wish I knew the name of it all I know is that it is shaped like a cone and it has jagged edges on the outside to keep it is the wall. You bang it in with a hammer and it wont come out then you s***w the s***w into it. Hope this was somewhat helpful.

    Good luck,

  3. You'll need to take out the stripped screws first then pre-drill the holes like you should have in the first place, make sure you have the right bit on the drill so you don't strip it out again and re drill it. You may need to use a pliers to get the screws that are stripped out. Don't try and force them in even if you say your not planning on moving it, do it right the first time.

  4. 1/2 inch should be enough to use a vice grip.

  5. pliers

  6. Power drill

    Remove bit

    Open chuck

    Close chuch around stripped s***w

    Reverse, remove stripped s***w

  7. Just s***w it in, even if you later decide to move it there are "bolt out" tools that can take out a stripped s***w pretty easily.

  8. tighten the chuck from your drill on the s***w head and remove the screws. if you dont have a drill, use visegrips
