Question:

Strong gas smell in house right now. What to do?

My mom and sisters and I went shopping today for our collage stuff at about 8:00 p.m. we didn't get back until 1:40 this morning. Here's the thing the second we unlocked the door to go in the house we smelled gas big time. Turns out one of the eyes of the stove was left on. We immediately tuned it off and good thing the windows in the kitchen were open or the smell would have been much worst. We opened all the rest of the windows in the house. However I noticed a blue flame is still on under the stove tops. I guess if the house hasn't blown up even though a flame is on that it was not that much gas concentrated enough to do so right?! As of this typing the computer is still on and I have a fan going on me because I am really scared of cutting the central air on also the refrigerator is still on. All the other lights in the house are off. I am so scared that I won't even cut water on. When is it a safe enough time to use electricity again and is that pilot light still being on dangerous and if it is how do I cut it off?

  1. You seem to have done well.  If you are still worried, find the main source of all the gas and turn it off.  Call the gas company to come and check everything out. Keeping the windows open is good.

  2. Maybe someone on your house FARTED very bad! tsk tsk tsk

  3. light a lighter

  4. Well you are probably safe if the place hasn't blown up yet. Just keep things well ventilated and make sure that there is no other gas leak. If so call the fire department about the leak and get out of the house.

  5. if you are still nervous, just call your local fire department. they will come with a CO detector and tell your if it is safe.

  6. Dude, is the stove on or not?  Otherwise if you smell sulfur (a skunk like smell) you have a gas leak.  Natural gas does not normally have a scent but, sulfur is added to it so people can detect it.  Or maybe check the carbon dioxide detector?  I hate to say this, but are your parent(s) complete dummies?

  7. if there is an open flame in the house (stove), you dont need to worry about electricity. it would have made it out the windows by now

  8. OOOH DONT DO ANYTHING THAT COULD CAUSE STATIC!! GET OFF THE COMPUTER, and call the fire department. They usually have a gas meeter to see how many parts per million of gas is in your house, and if it's safe to enter. Get everyone out of the house!

  9. IF IT HASN'T BLOWN BY NOW DON'T THINK ITS GONNA,BUT IF YOU LOOK BEHIND THE STOVE YOU'LL SEE A CUT OFF VALVE,JUST REACH DOWN AND CUT IT OFF.NO,IT WONT HURT TO TURN THE CENT.AIR ON

  10. get out. dont turn any lights on or off. or do anything that can cause a spark. call gas company or 911 from a neighbor.

  11. If the pilot is still on, you're fine.  If the house were going to blow, it would have done so by now.  The smell is probably not as strong as you think....it's just "up your nose", if you know what I mean.

  12. Relax get a glass of wine and have a smoke hahaha

  13. omg some of these people are so rude!

don't worry just don't turn the stove or anything on

keep the windows open and the fan on

its ok to turn the water on though

if it doesn't get any better after a while

you should maybe call a professional who knows all about that stuff

  14. It is fine now to turn use anything you want. It was very lucky that the windows were open becuase the gas could not form enough to be ignited by the flame. Just make sure the gas is turned over on the stove and just leave some windows open to help air it out. Otherwise all is fine. Unless you still have the smell in the morning there could be a leak and you would need to get it checked asap

  15. gt the gas ppl to come down.. looks like ur pipe has burst... do not put any flammable items near it... do not strike matches like some fools said.... no fire!!!

  16. You should be fine, make sure to keep all windows open for a few hours. i dont think you are in any danger right now, if it could have blown up, it should have already.

  17. you are fine! we had the same thing happen to us, you will be okay! Just make sure that you turned off the eye you left on and everything will be fine! i promise

  18. RUN!!! haha

  19. uh  call 911

  20. I would have to say that if your pilot light is on, and you are typing, you should be okay lol. Open all the windows of your house and in one final window put a fan in it and point it facing OUT. That will push all the bad air out and suck good air in. If you are that nervous about it, after doing the windows, go outside for an hour or so.

  21. eat a lot of beans and broccili, fight gas with ur own gas

  22. GET OUT! Call 911 from a neighbours house or your cell phone after you're out. Tell them you have gas in the house. They will take care of the rest. DO NOT re-enter the house until you have been given the all clear.

Gas is heavier than air and your basement is probably saturated with it.

  23. open all doors and windows and turn on all the ac's and then get out of the house instead of sitting behind the pc and come back when things get better.

  24. Get out of the house immediately and call your gas supplier to ask how to proceed.

  25. maybe call your gas company or the fire department they are the professionals

  26. Call the gas company where u like they should have some emergency option and they will go right away.

  27. light a match

  28. Call a fire department

  29. forget about the house. save urself
