Strong offense and solid defence leads Warriors to another victory at home soil – Volleyball news
The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team repeated the brilliant act of volleyball on Saturday, January 28, while playing against Grand Canyon team at the Stan Sheriff Centre.
The Warriors dropped only one frame in four-set match and dug up success by sending 3-1 (25-21, 27-29, 25-16, 25-21) on board. It was the second and last meeting of these two teams in the 2012 season.
The UH did well in both matches and achieved 2-0 record, while the Antelopes of Grand Canyon University dropped the chance of winning against Hawaiian men in the season. With this particular win the Warriors improved to 4-5 record, while GCU fell to 5-5.
Strong offense and solid defence was the key to Warriors’ success in the match. They came up with a winning plan and perfectly executed it. Outside hitter Steven Hunt supported the team with 21 kills and reached the 20-kill mark for third time in last four
fixtures. He topped all the scorers with match-high 24 points. Taylor Averill, the freshman outside hitter, also did a terrific job. He added 12 kills and 10 digs, whereas seven blocks were also credited to him.
Nick West and JP Marks came hard on GCU and notched up 13 and 10 kills, respectively. The defence expert of Warriors Nick Castello tackled the difficult shots from the opponents and saved many crucial points. He added match-high 15 digs and received huge
applause from the local audience.
Ben Ponnet and Taylor Galliano put up good effort for GCU. They were the only two players on GCU side, who scored double digit scores. Ponnet added 23 points and emerged as the second best scorer in the match.
The Antelopes entered the match with an ambition to take revenge from the Warriors. Their intentions became evident as they added some quick points and pulled ahead of the Warriors. The Lopes maintained their lead until UH men hit the equaliser at 13-all.
The Lopes quickly responded with one point and once again took lead.
However, the Warriors continued with their spirited effort and managed to push the opponent behind. UH rallied from 17-15 to 25-21 and went on front, 1-0.
After winning the opening set, the Warriors enjoyed a great rhythm and tone. They hit confident shots and jumped onto 5-2 lead. Warriors’ Hunt and Ponnet of Lopes came into stride. The fans saw the cracking hot action of volleyball on the net as both players
attacked with full power and delivered mighty hits. The game continued, while both teams kept trying to win the second set. The Grand Canyon squad threw everything in attack and eventually captured second set, 29-27.
It seemed as if Antelopes would create trouble for Warriors in the next set as well. Nevertheless, the UH men were quite aware of the situation. They remained remarkably consistent and captured both sets, in order to win the match.
