Strong sailing brings Greg Wilcox on top podium of 2012 OK Dinghy World Championship
Third day of the 2012 OK Dinghy World Championship was supposed to be filled with strong winds over the racing area of Vallensbaek in Denmark but it did not go according to the hopes of race committee and the participants.
The start of the day was tremendous as there was a strong wind approximately up to 10 knots wafting over the racing area before the fleet was asked to launch their boats into the waters. Before the fleet could start the third day proceedings, the winds died
and started to move on lower knots.
The sailors had to wait for the wind to fill in over the race course before they could compete. After a while, the race committee witnessed a little stronger wind which was enough to start the racing proceedings. So they asked the fleet to begin the first
race.
The fleet began the first race under wind blowing from five to seven knots which helped a little for completing the races. However, the sailors completed the scheduled races before the breeze could reduce and trouble them.
New Zealand’s Greg Wilcox sailed impressively on the third day and was able to claim the leading podium position with 20 points. He started with a low speed but took advantage of the available breeze showing some great tactics and was able to finish on the
first podium.
He spoke to the local media about the conditions he faced on Day 3, “I wasn't at all confident about holding the lead as it was so tricky but I managed to open out on the reaches quite a lot and then the second beat there weren't that many places to go and
so everyone was kind of following me.”
Wilcox managed to put in a good performance as he used some brilliant race tactics on the third day.
Overall standings at the end of Day 3:
1. NZL 544 Greg Wilcox PSV 3, 16, 1 = 20 Points
2. GER 762 André Budzien Schweriner Yachtclub 2, 3, 17 = 22 Points
3. DEN 1393 Rene Johannsen MSS 4, 5, 23 = 32 Points
4. DEN 1377 Jørgen Holm Nielsen Kaløvig Bådelaug 16, 15, 3 = 34 Points
5. SWE 100 Thomas Hansson-Mild SS Kaparen 24, 7, 9 = 40 Points
6. DEN 1374 Bo Petersen Hellerup Sejlklub 1, 9, 38 = 48 Points
7. NZL 542 Alistair Deaves Wakatere Boating Club 6, 21, 24 = 51 Points
