Question:

Strong smelling Luck "E" Strike Bass Magic swimbaits?

What can I do to rid my hollow body swimbaits of this strong "paint like" odor on them? They smelled that way right out of the packaging. I've tried soaking them in several scents and that doesn't work one bit! The fish aren't hitting them like similar swimbaits I've used, and I feel the strong chemical odor creates aversion. I'm all out of other swimbaits for now and at $8.00 for 5, I don't wanna toss these. Is there a plausible solution for this problem? Thanks.

  1. In my honest opinion i would return the them to where you bought them and tell them they aren't up to standards, its possible they were made of the wrong type of plastic or that the plastic bag they came in was heat sealed and causes them to smell, they should refund you, save your scents for old baits that need a boost.

  2. One attractant I have found that will cover up just about ANY plastic scent is the Spike-It Garlic. They do have dyes in them that will color your swimbait, but you can either mimick the colors on them already, or change the way they look entirely. I use this to paint the tails on my white grubs red, and it really puts a good garlic scent on it that doesn't wash off for a LONG time. It's a very strong scent too, so it covers up some of the worse plastic/paint smell that I've seen on some of these swimbaits.

I use the the dip-n-glo ones, but I'm sure the markers would do fine as well, and you can get them in Game Fish scent as well, which I'm sure would do good on something that looks like a fish. I plan on getting a small paint brush and using the red dip dye to paint my shad swimbaits to look like they have a stream of blood running from an eye or gill, I bet that would draw attention...lol.

You can also get this stuff from Bass Pro if you prefer to shop there. I just prefer cabelas myself. Someone else might be able to give you a cheaper alternative, but this is what has worked for me. I hope it helps you. Good luck.

    Tight lines!!

  3. The best Scent that you can buy is called Kickin' Bass...it is made by an angler in Arizona...this stuff is great...I swear by it...the Garlic is my favorite...I have noticed hollow bodies swimbaits having that smell...but I have not used any of them yet...I hear they are great, but just can't put the Shakey Head down...lol...but Kickin Bass is great...the guy who makes it is a great guy and he will sometimes throw in a free scent...I just ran out of the Garlic right before my last Tournament I only had enough to put a small amount in my ziplock bag (that is the only draw back of the scent...it is so thick you have to put a amount of it in a zip lock bag and dip your bait it it...but it works fine) and I did not do very well...but the fish really weren't biting either...I hate night tournaments...=( ...this stuff is so strong, my car smells like Kickin Bass a week after I take my tackle bag out...hope this helps with your problem...it might even help you catch more bass...
