Question:

Strong varnish odor in RV ?

My travel trailer still smells VERY strongly of the wood varnish from when we bought it new several years ago. In the heat of the sun, it can get so strong is hurts our eyes and throats. This can't be healthy, I don't know if it's formaldehyde or what, but I thought it would be gone or at least fading by now. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this smell to fade away ?

  1. Could be formaldhyde. does it have a lot of particleboard in it.

Remember the fema trailers where people were getting sick!

I went to a rv show and you could tell the ones that had a lot of it inside. It would burn your eyes and throat would start feeling dry. I would get out of those in a hurry because I didn't like it.

    Take care!

  2. No, it's not healthy.

Park it in the sun for several days, with the windows  and the roof vent cracked, and let it air out.

You could also purchase or borrow an ozone generator, and let it run full blast inside the unoccupied vehicle, with the windows and roof vent cracked. The ozone will combine with the gases and neutralize them.

It might take a while to get it where you can't smell it, and it would probably be a good idea to run the air conditioner for a while every day to better circulate the air - first thing in the morning might be best, since that's when it's coolest anyway.
