So about a year ago, I did a real crappy paint job. And now I'm trying to clean up the doors.

I tried Mineral Spirits and Paint thinner...neither seem to be working. Is there a better way to remove this paint.

This is $1 spray paint from wal-mart.

and this is latex based paint (if I remember correctly)

What would you recommend to get this off? If it is a matter of using paint thinner, should I let it soak? Or use some kind of scrubber?

Thanks!!!!

  1. For future reference, old paint is harder to remove than fresh paint. I learned that the hard way also.

These are laminate doors, and any chemical you use that is strong enough to remove the paint will damage the surface. You could try using a heat gun (like a big hair dryer) and razor scraper, which works well in some situations. The heat soften the paint, and the scraper will remove it.

My suggestion would be to forget removing the paint. Just paint the doors white (or other neutral color). It is fast, cheap, and guaranteed to work the first try.

  2. Go to home depot and get a gallon of ZEP Heavy Duty Citrus Degreaser and use it concentrated on a microfiber cloth. I just spray painted my kitchen cabinets and used this to remove all the paint overspray on the floors, walls and counters. It will take that paint off!

  3. buy some paint remover, and follow the directions

  4. Zip Strip Takes Car Paint Off and Furniture Paint Off.  I'm sure it would do GREAT on your door.
