Struggle continues for Jim Furyk this season
If there is one person who has been unlucky this season, it has to be Jim Furyk. The veteran has been so close to lifting the first title of the season on a number of occasions, but luck never seems to be on his side.
At the McGladrey Classic, Furyk was tied for the lead with Davis Love III after the third round. In fact, they were leading the tournament by two strokes but a magnificent round of 60 by Tommy Gainey had to ruin the party for them.
If we look at Furyk’s scorecard, we will find that it is not entirely his bad luck. He has been somewhat of a partner in crime as well.
At the Seaside Course, on Sunday, Furyk had things under control even after Gainey had shot a stunning 60.
The world number 23 was just one stroke behind before teeing off on the seventeenth hole. A par there meant that he needed a birdie to force the game into a playoff.
Instead of birdying the last hole, Furyk could only settle for a bogey to finish his last round, with a score of 69.
May be it is the last round pressure or what, but one thing is common in his results – he ends up stumbling during the final rounds very frequently.
Who can forget his slip up in the US Open? The double bogey at the Bridgestone Invitational forced him to surrender his lead at the tournament.
Last but not the least, his two bogeys on the final two holes at the Ryder Cup really pulled him down.
"I think what I'm most disappointed about is when it came down the stretch, hitting the ball pretty much as good as I can, I made really, really poor swings at 17 and 18 with a 7-iron and 8-iron," Furyk said.
"So to play those two holes and not get one good look at it for birdie was disappointing".
Love’s hope of being the first Ryder Cup captain to win on the PGA Tour after Tom Watson faded away, as he could only come up with a 71. In the end, Davis Love III finished for a T4 finish at the Seaside Course.
