Struggling San Francisco 49ers fall to 0-5 after loss to the Philadelphia Eagles
The woes continue for Mike Singletary and the San Francisco 49ers, who fell to 0-5 on the season after a 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
What went down
Kevin Kolb was in at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, filling in for the injured Michael Vick. Kolb was solid for the Eagles throwing for 253 yards and one touchdown, while running back LeSean
McCoy led the way along the ground with 92 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown.
The turning point of the game came early in the fourth quarter when the 49ers took possession with good field position after a missed field goal attempt by David Akers. As the 49ers made their way into
Eagles territory looking to tie the game, quarterback Alex Smith was sacked by Eagles rookie defensive end Brandon Graham, knocking the ball loose. The ball was recovered by saftey Quintin Mikell and returned 52 yards to the house to put the Eagles up by two
touchdowns.
Despite managing to get those two touchdowns back, the 49ers still saw the game slip out of reach as the Ealges added a field goal. After leading the 49ers into Eagles territory on one last possession
late in the game, quarterback  Smith was intercepted by Trevard Lindley for Smith's second interception of the game.
What they're saying
Despite the 0-5 start Singletary insists that his team is better than their record might indicate.
"I think a pretty decent football team is 0-5," he said. "I'm disappointed for them, because we put ourselves in this situation. Only we can get ourselves out."
Eagles quarterback Kolb was impressed with the team's performance and highlighted the importance of his team's ability to create turnovers.
"We made it happen when it counted in every aspect of the game," he said. "Our defense was dead tired, and we got those five turnovers and that big one at the end. We had to have this game, and we played
with that kind of mentality. Their backs were against the wall, and we played the physical football we needed to win."
What it all means
The San Francisco 49ers, along with only the Carolina Panthers are now 0-5 and sit dead last in their division. Despite their worst start in three decades Singletary still has his job and Smith appears
to still be the starting quarterback, but only for the time being. Fans in San Francisco actually began cheering for backup quarterback David Carr who never made an appearance. The 49ers play at home against the Oakland Raiders next week.
The Philadelphia Eagles got themselves a very important win to stay competitive in the tight NFC East Division as they prepare to take on one of the top teams in the NFC next week – the Atlanta Falcons.
