Stuart Appleby surges to the fourth place at the Travelers Championship
Stuart Appleby registered a five-under par 65 in the second round of the Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands, in Cromwell, to tie for the fourth place prior to the inclement weather forcing the game into suspension, on Friday, June 22, 2012.
Appleby got off to a confident start, as he carded a birdie on the very first hole that he played. Thereafter, he managed to score another six birdies against two bogeys to finish two strokes behind the leader, Fredrik Jacobson.
According to him, the playing conditions were quite easy early in the morning, as there was not any sign of strong winds on the course.
However, the forecast of rainfall and strong breeze was already made for the evening session in River Highlands.
“Conditions are easier in the morning, no doubt,” he said. “Yesterday, obviously sort of (inaudible) in the afternoon made it difficult. A bit of a breeze today”.
The 2012 golf season has not been a good one so far for Appleby and it was a good sign for him to remain in contention for the top spot while entering the weekend this time.
He suffered a back injury early in the 2011 season that affected his swing to a great extent. As a result, he had to make several adjustments to his playing style.
“I'm getting better. I mean it's really a crumbling wreck, my game. I wasn't hitting it any good and I wasn't thinking any good and I was just really finding it very hard,” he said.
“All self-induced issues. I had a back injury that was affecting my swing, not hurting me, and that seemed to make it hard to get on top of that most of last year, or all of last year”.
He now believes that he is mentally and physically fit that can help him make a good mark on the tour this year.
Meanwhile, Blake Adams and Roland Thatcher also joined him on the leaderboard after carding six-under and three-under par scores, respectively.
Adams registered the best score of the day with the help of eight birdies against two bogeys.
