Stuart Bingham defeats Mark Williams to claim first ranking title: 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
England’s Stuart Bingham made a remarkable break in his snooker career after he defeated world number one, Mark Williams, in the final of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open to claim his first ever ranking
title victory. Bingham outplayed the Welsh professional snooker star by the scoreline of 9-8 at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria, on Sunday, July 24.
The England-Wales clash was a thrilling competition, as both cuemen played to the best of their abilities. The 35-year-old Bingham made a superb comeback during the match when he was 5-8 down to Williams.
The Englishman’s comeback completely outclassed Williams and he couldn’t save himself from an inevitable defeat.
The Welsh Potting Machine, Williams didn’t see that coming, as Bingham stopped him from claiming his 19th ranking title victory. Williams had a tremendous run in the tournament, as he ousted
Barry Pinches, David Gilbert, Dominic Dale and Ken Doherty to set up Bingham clash, however his run came to an end owing to a brilliant display of snooker by the Englishman.
While speaking to the local media after the victory, Bingham said, “This is without doubt the best week of my life - it's just an unbelievable feeling. I don't need to say any more. I just have a
nice trophy to prove it and $60,000 in the bank," added Bingham. I don't care what anyone says. I have this for the rest of my life and no one can take this title away from me.”
He added, “Now the hard work comes as I have to live up to being a ranking event winner and now I'm the hunted instead of the hunter. I've been knocking on the door but now the door is open and I've
walked through it and grabbed the trophy with both hands.”
Bingham was quite happy after he lifted the Australian event trophy. He admitted in the end that his body language was all over the place, as playing against Williams was itself a challenge to him,
especially when he faced him in the finals of his first ranking event title.
