The pacer sustained the knock during a practice session at the VCA Stadium on Tuesday, and was immediately sent for scans on his already troublesome left heel to determine the extent of the injury.
"Stuart Broad has gone for a scan on his heel. There will be a further update later today," a statement from the ECB on their official Twitter feed read.
The pacer first suffered the injury ahead of the Test series, when he took part in the second warm-up match against Mumbai A. He bowled just 10 overs during that game, before being taken off, but was deemed fit to take part in the first two Tests.
However, his performances in the series have been mediocre to say the least, where he has yet to claim a wicket. He conceded 97 runs at Ahmedabad before leaking 60 in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964, is struggling to get used to the Indian conditions, which has further dented his confidence.
"He's finding it tough, no doubt," http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-James-Saker-c52896 said after the win at Mumbai. "He's learning it the hard way at the moment and it's probably not going the way he'd like it to go."
The management opted to play http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ST-Finn-c2566 in the recently concluded match at Kolkata, and the lanky pacer quickly repaid the faith by claiming four wickets as England swept aside India convincingly.
While it is likely that Broad will miss out on the playing XI for the final Test, his injury further puts doubt over his T20 involvement where he was expected to lead the side in the two games, starting from December 20.
For now, the tourists will be hoping to clinch their first Test series win since 1984 on Indian soil, and will wait for the final reports before deciding whether to name a successor for the injured pacer.
