Clarke, the 36-year-old former medium-pacer from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823, feels that the wicketkeeper batsman has proved his mettle and leadership skills despite facing criticism from former players and pundits.
Clarke said that Haddin’s promotion as vice captain of the team has helped the youngsters and ultimately the team a lot.
"I think it's important he's in the team for that reason. Those guys are still learning their craft, they need an older head around," said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stuart-H-Clarke-c91461 who is playing for Sydney Sixers in the ongoing Big Bash League.
"He's important for them because he can bridge that gap from someone like Ricky (Ponting), who has played 160 Tests, to someone like Dave Warner, who has played four," he added further.
Brad Haddin, the former T20 captain of Australia, was recently appointed as captain of Sydney Sixers for the inaugural edition of KFC Big Bash League, underway in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. But, he could play for the league side only in the opening match before joining
the national side as injured Tim Paine’s replacement.
"If we didn't think he was a good leader we would have never decided to make him captain," said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clark-c51118 of his Sudney Sixers’ teammate.
"He's a guy that everyone will follow if he shows them the way.. he'll tell you how he wants you to play and he expects you to follow him, but he's also prepared to value the time to understand what you need," he added further.
Earlier, former Australian keepers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-John-Rixon-c91144 and Brain Taber had also backed the under-fire Haddin.
Taber agreed that the wicketkeeper batsman had not been at his best of late, however he was hopeful Haddin would soon make a strong comeback and that too in the ongoing Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750. In the ongoing Test series against India, Haddin has scored
just 33 runs in two innings.
Australia presently lead the four-match Test series 2-0 with the third Test starting at WACA Ground in Perth on Friday, January 13, 2012.
