Stuart Dickens of Featherstone happy with team’s convincing Final win -
Co-operative Championship
Stuart Dickens, Captain of Featherstone, guided his team to a thumping record victory over the Sheffield Eagles in the Co-operative Championship Grand Final. Afterwards he expressed his delight with the win and also spoke about some of the key moments of
his long career.
Dickens has spent most of his professional career with Rovers, although he did have a small stint in Super League with Salford. He was very excited with his sides scintillating performance which saw his side score 40-4 to overshadow the previous record of
Castleford’s 42-10 in 2007.
Talking about the game Dickens showed his delight by saying, “I've been involved with the club for a long time and to win something like this is fantastic.” He also added, “It's the best moment of my career by far”
Liam Finn who had an amazing game also gave his views on the match and said, “Last year we were involved in a cracking final for the neutral, this one was probably one of the most boring finals but I'd much rather have it this way,”
Finn scored 20 points with two tries and six goals. The player made sure that his team did not have to see a repeat of last year’s game against Halifax, which saw the game go into extra time with Featherstone finally loosing. The club finished the season
17 points ahead of Sheffield. The gap between the two sides was very pronounced as Sheffield was the first team to reach the final from outside the top two and their weakness showed in the final against a top notch seasoned Featherstone side.
This was probably the biggest match for the Eagles since 1998, when they beat Wigan at Wembley at the Challenge Cup. Although it was apparent that the side’s inexperience would eventually bring them defeat in the final.
On the other hand, Keighley player and coach, Jason Demetriou, is on the verge of retiring after a satisfying promotion of the Cougars in his first attempt. The 35-year-old was also the Man of the Match in Keighley’s 32-12 Championship. He felt this was
the most appropriate time to hang up his boots on a winning note.
“I'm not sure yet, it depends on the type of player I can bring in. If I can get some experienced guys, I will probably retire," said the player as he shed some light on his recent decision to retire in the near future. Whether he retires now or a later,
one thing is certain, that the game is going to see off a quality hard working player who gives his 100 percent in all the games he appears in. He had the potential to achieve even more given his talent but overall it would be a very satisfying end to his
illustrious career.
