Stuart Lancaster gives Danny Care a warning – Rugby News Update
Danny Care, the 25-year-old England scrum-half has been selected in the 42 man squad for the tour of South Africa, where England plays a three-match test series, along with two other midweek games.
Care has been out of the national reckoning due to his misdemeanours over the last year, his most notable exit being from the 2012 Six Nations tournament. Stuart Lancaster, England’s head coach had stated previously that he will not select the scrum-half
until he can be trusted again.
Speaking on the tour and taking Care with the team, Lancaster has laid down the rules for Care, saying that the 25-year-old is treading a very thin line.
"In order to be an England player on the field you have to be able to lead yourself off the field. Danny needed to reassure me he could," Lancaster said. "I met Danny. I am pleased with the progress he has made and the maturity he is now showing off the
field.”
Care was caught drunk driving this New Years Eve and more recently he was released on bail after he was accused of sexual assault. However, the scrum-half denies these charges. Lancaster, speaking about the situation, mentioned that he had spoken with Care's
lawyers, who told him that the English man will not need to come back for a hearing during the stipulated tour dates.
Clarifying the last chance he is affording Care, Lancaster said, "It is a great opportunity but equally he knows he is treading a very fine line, but I trust him enough to have the confidence to take him. He is a player in form and playing at a good club
who are in a big (Premiership) semi-final this weekend.”
Care burst on the international rugby scene in 2008, with his pace and inventiveness making him a formidable opposition. He made his debut in the same year against New Zealand at Auckland, and was a regular with the English squad, till he started having
his brushes with the law. He played his last game for England against Wales, in August 2011, and he is set to make a return to international rugby after a hiatus of a year.
