Former Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill has slammed the Australian selection committee for depriving Simon Katich a central contract.
In a push to include more youngsters in the team, Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 (CA) generated a huge controversy when it announced the list of 25 new contracted players for the upcoming season. Leaving out Katich was a big surprise as the left hander has done exceedingly
well since last couple of years in the longer version of the sport.
MacGill feels that the exclusion of Katich is going to put a lot of pressure on the young opener who is going to replace him in the Test lineup. Former leg-spinner also criticized the chairman of selection Panel Andrew Hilditch and said that he is too old
for the job now and he should be replaced first of all rather than Katich.
"If you were that way inclined, you could make a lot of money this season by speculating how few runs his replacement will make because he knows he shouldn't be getting the job, he knows he hasn't done enough to get the job, let alone dislodge the guy who
was the incumbent, and he knows what everybody else in the country is thinking," said Macgill.
A number of former cricketers and experts in Australia have called this decision ‘bizarre’ and believe that the best players should be in the team irrespective of their age.
The 35-years old left hander, who started his career as a middle order batsman before converting into a genuine opening batsman, is currently averaging more than 45 runs per innings in 56 Test matches and has scored 10 hundreds. Since taking over the role
of an opener, Katich has performed even better and has been consistently doing to the job for the Kangaroos.
MacGill believes that the current selection process is outdated and it is about time that CA overhauls its selection panel on modern techniques.
He said, "In every major business across the world, you have got a very active and enthusiastic recruiting department, graduate programs, professional development programs. That massive business of recruitment is part time in the Australian cricket team.”
