Stuart O’Grady strengthens Green Edge as he signs two year deal with team – Cycling News
Team Green Edge has signed the Australian cyclist Stuart O’ Grady for a period of two years. O’ Grady was delighted to sign the contract as he has awaited this opportunity since a long time.
“To ride for an Australian team has been a dream of mine since I turned pro way back in 1995. I wasn’t sure such a team would come around before I retired but I’m glad it has,” as he mentioned.
Stuart O’ Grady became the first Australian to win the Paris Roubaix as he won the 105th Paris Roubaix in 2007. He launched the attack with 20 kilometres to go in the race and managed to cross the finish line in the first place, “I was going to
win or die trying,” he shared his thoughts after winning the 2007 Paris Roubaix. He was overjoyed with the victory as he stated that it is all a result of hard work and efforts that his team has put in for over a year to make this win possible as he thanked
his team after the win.
The 38-year-old was with Leopard Trek for 2011 season after he left Saxo Bank. He stayed with Saxo Bank for five seasons. He mentioned that decision to leave Leopard Trek was not an easy one especially when he had to leave his old team-mates and friends
like Fabian Cancellara, Schleck Brothers and Jens Voigt as he stated, “It’s been a privilege racing with those guys and leaving Leopard Trek to join Green Edge has been the hardest decision of my career.”
O’Grady told the media that he has seen players like Neil Stephens, Patrick Jonker and Phil Anderson that has developed themselves as mature cyclists and also the youngsters who have impressed the world with their performances. He added that cycling is not
followed much in Australia but still the improvement in the sport is an impressive achievement.
Some of the other additions in the team Green Edge are Cameron Meyer, Travis Meyer and Daniel Teklehaymanot. Team Green Edge is hopeful that experience of O’ Grady will come in handy and new guys will learn from the experience of the Australian cyclist.
