Stuart Rolt says Silverstone’s future will be decided by the end of 2012 – Formula 1 news
Chairman of British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Stuart Rolt has told that by the end of 2012, the future of Silverstone will be decided.
He said that either they will finalise a detailed deal for all of the Silverstone or they will be asking other businesses to rent or buy a long lease of parts of the non-circuit land, if Silverstone is unable to arrange 150 million pounds by the end of this
year.
Stuart Rolt told the Daily Telegraph, “By the end of the year at the latest we will have either done a comprehensive deal for all of Silverstone or we will maybe be talking to entities about renting or buying a long lease on parts of the non-circuit land.”
Silverstone needs 150 million pounds to get its maintenance work done especially after the destruction caused by the rain so that it may keep hosting the British GP as it has been doing since 1948.
Silverstone is a British circuit which hosts several events over the year including the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. It is controlled by BRDC. It is very difficult to get membership in the club. Despite its long history, it has only 850 members. All the
British drivers are its members.
The last grand Prix scheduled here was British GP. During the race, it rained heavily making a significant impact on the race results. Mark Webber won the race, defeating the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso with a lead of 3 seconds.
The weather played an integral part in the race results although Ferrari is not known to be among the fastest cars of the season.
Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was the third person making it to the podium leaving Felipe Massa behind.
This is the second circuit after Nurburgring which is facing financial problems for the purpose of maintenance to host sophisticated Formula 1 races however, the problems faced by the German track are more of the serious nature than with the problem faced
by Silverstone.
It will be interesting to see how Silverstone tackles its problems.
