Stubborn crafstman chainsaw?

i have this old craftsman chain saw i still cant get started... i got it started for about 2 minutes and then it died.. i have the right fuel mixture.. i cleaned the spark plug and the gas filter.. and ive tried all the settings on the choke.. i also trying starting fluid.. once in a while it sounds like its guna start but only for half a second. plz help i dont know what else to try..

  1. Sounds like you need to rebuild the carburetor.  The diaphams go bad over time and one of them is the fuel pump.  The rebuild kits are about $15.00 and it is an easy job.  Take the make and any numbers off the carb when you go to the small engine repair shop for parts.  Or take the whole carb with you.  There are several brands and sizes.  


  2. try pouring a couple of cap fulls of oil in the cylinder through the spark plug hole. this will help get the compression up where it should be on an old tired motor

  3. Air filter?  They get  clogged quickly on many chainsaws.

  4. Remove the exhaust screen and clean it out.  Those 2 stroke engine produced a lot of ashes and will clog up the exhaust screen.  I just removed mine, although it is very loud with out it.
